The Senate has passed the Federal Road Safety Corps Amendment Bill, 2026.
The bill proposes tougher penalties for several traffic-related offences.
The bill, which has been forwarded for presidential assent, is aimed at strengthening road safety enforcement and improving compliance with traffic regulations nationwide.
Under the proposed law, anyone found engaging in hawking, trading or preaching inside a commercial vehicle would be liable, upon conviction, to a fifty thousand naira fine. Lawmakers say the measure is intended to reduce distractions and improve the safety of commuters.
The legislation also increases the penalty for driving under the influence of alcohol or intoxicating drugs from five thousand naira to one hundred thousand naira, with offenders facing up to two years imprisonment or both.
Motorists who refuse to cooperate with Federal Road Safety Corps officers during roadside breath tests based on reasonable suspicion would also face a fifty thousand naira fine, six months imprisonment, or both.
In addition, the bill raises the penalty for ignoring traffic lights, road signs and other traffic control devices to one hundred thousand naira. The same penalty also applies to speed limit violations, while reckless driving could attract a one hundred thousand naira fine, up to two years imprisonment, or both.
