Nigeria’s excellent showing at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games continued on Monday as Rafiatu Folashade Lawal successfully defended her crown by shattering the Games record to win gold in the women’s 58kg weightlifting event.

Lawal lifted a combined total of 229kg to claim Nigeria’s sixth gold medal and set a new Commonwealth Games record, finishing well clear of the rest of the field.

Ann-Sophie Taschereau of Canada got the silver with a total lift of 215kg, while India’s Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam took bronze after recording 199kg.

Lawal’s triumph marked Team Nigeria’s third gold medal in weightlifting at the Games.

Earlier on Monday, Edidiong Joseph Umoafia clinched gold in the men’s 71kg event, while Onome Didih won gold in the women’s 53kg category with a record-breaking performance of her own.

Team Nigeria has now amassed 10 medals at the Games consisting of six gold and four silver medals to continue an impressive campaign so far in Glasgow, Scotland
