FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TIGHTENS BORDER SECURITY OVER SAHEL INSTABILITY, SAYS DEFENCE MINISTER

The Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (Rtd), said the Federal Government has intensified measures to strengthen Nigeria’s borders against security threats emanating from the volatile Sahel region.
Musa spoke in Luanda, Angola, during an engagement with members of the Nigerian community in the country on the sidelines of the 21st Extraordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU).

The Nigerian delegation to the AU summit was led by Vice President Kashim Shettima, who represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The minister said some of Nigeria’s security challenges were linked to instability in the Sahel, with the effects spilling across the country’s borders.

Musa also said the government was strengthening the numerical strength and operational capabilities of the Armed Forces and other security agencies to tackle emerging threats across the country.

He said the administration of President Tinubu is committed to defeating security threats nationwide, adding that efforts were ongoing to increase the manpower and operational capacity of the Armed Forces and other security agencies.

The minister said the government was also implementing interventions across various sectors to strengthen the country’s overall security architecture.
