Now to sad new where the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria has announced the passing of Most Rev. Augustine Obiora Akubeze, the Metropolitan Archbishop of Benin City.
Akubueze died on Thursday, 9th July 2026, at the age of 69.
In an official statement released late Thursday evening, the Secretariat described the late Archbishop as a unique shepherd who worked tirelessly for both the spiritual renewal and the holistic development of God’s people.
The statement noted that under his leadership, the Archdiocese of Benin City recorded significant developmental strides.
Archbishop Akubeze was also a former President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria.
He was known for his firm commitment to orthodox teaching, his deep spirituality, humility, and genuine care for his priests and flock.
His episcopal motto was “Ut Testimonium perhibeam veritati” – meaning “That I may bear witness to the Truth.”
The statement prayed for the peaceful repose of his soul and eternal rest in God’s kingdom.
