The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, SWAN has commended the leadership of the National Sports Commission, NSC for the prompt and transparent disbursement of cash rewards to Team Nigeria athletes who have won medals at the ongoing 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, describing the initiative as a major milestone in athlete welfare and a strong incentive for sustained excellence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The commendation was contained in a statement issued on Sunday by the Secretary General of the association, Ambassador Ikenna Okonkwo on behalf of the SWAN President, Isaiah Benjamin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The statement praised NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko, and the Director General, Honourable Bukola Olopade, for introducing a transparent reward system that ensures medal-winning athletes receive immediate financial rewards at the competition venue, while the balance is paid directly into their personal bank accounts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to SWAN, the initiative represents a commendable departure from previous practices and demonstrates the Commission\u2019s commitment to transparency, accountability and the welfare of Nigerian athletes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The association stated that the immediate presentation of cash rewards to athletes shortly after winning medals has sent a positive signal that excellence, discipline and patriotism are valued and appreciated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SWAN noted that the new reward mechanism has boosted confidence among athletes and stakeholders alike, adding that prompt recognition of outstanding performances is capable of motivating competitors to remain committed to achieving success on the international stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The association stressed that athletes perform better when they are assured that their sacrifices and achievements will be acknowledged without unnecessary delays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The association reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the National Sports Commission in its efforts to reposition Nigerian sports through constructive engagement and professional sports journalism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
