The European Union (EU) Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS has dismissed reports that it rejected an invitation from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to observe the 2027 general elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reports had claimed that the EU would not deploy an election observation mission for the polls, citing worsening insecurity in the country and alleged hostile treatment of its observers and officials following its 2023 election observation mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, in a statement by the EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Gautier Mignot, on Monday, the EU Delegation described the reports as inaccurate and clarified that it had accepted INEC\u2019s invitation, although it would deploy an Electoral Expert Mission (EEM) rather than a conventional election observation mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The delegation said INEC formally invited it to deploy observers for the 2027 elections in a letter dated April 17th, 2026, which it responded to on July 28th.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The EU said an EEM, like an Electoral Observation Mission, assesses whether the electoral process is conducted in line with international, regional and national obligations and commitments on the conduct of democratic elections to which the country has subscribed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The EU also rejected the reasons attributed to its decision in the earlier reports, saying neither worsening insecurity nor alleged hostile treatment of its officials featured in its correspondence with INEC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It explained that the EU makes annual decisions on the type of electoral missions to deploy to partner countries that extend invitations, based on the circumstances of each country and available resources.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
