Benson Idahosa University, BIU, is set to graduate 1,324 students at its 22nd Convocation Ceremony, with 144 of the graduating students earning first-class honours.

The Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor John Aroye Okhuoya, disclosed this at a press conference ahead of the convocation, saying the graduating class comprises 1,059 undergraduates and 265 postgraduate students drawn from nine faculties and the School of Postgraduate Studies.

According to him, 490 students graduated with second-class upper honours, 377 with second-class lower, while 48 students graduated with third-class honours, with the university also producing its first sets of graduates in B.Sc. Human Anatomy and B.Sc. Human Physiology.

The Vice Chancellor said the best graduating student emerged from the Department of Human Anatomy with a cumulative grade point average of 4.99, describing the achievement as a reflection of the university’s commitment to academic excellence.

Professor Okhuoya also used the occasion to call on the Federal Government to review the law establishing the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, TETFund, to allow qualified private universities to benefit from the intervention fund.

He said private universities are currently excluded from TETFund support, despite their contribution to the development of tertiary education in Nigeria, stressing that they should also be given access to funding that can support infrastructure, research and other areas of institutional development.

“I believe that private universities should be beneficiaries of TETFUND,” the Vice Chancellor said, appealing to the Federal Government to reconsider the existing policy.

The university is also celebrating major strides in professional and academic accreditation, including its first clinical accreditation of the MBBS programme by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, MDCN.

Professor Okhuoya said the accreditation has enabled the university to conduct Part III examinations and the Part II Professional Examination in Medicine and Surgery, while the annual admission quota for Medicine has been increased from 50 to 100 students.

“For us, this is not merely an increase in numbers. It is an opportunity to contribute more significantly to the development of Nigeria’s healthcare workforce,” he said.

The Vice Chancellor further disclosed that the university recently secured full accreditation for Agriculture, Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Banking and Finance, as well as NUC resource verification and licensing for B.Sc. Cyber Security, Software Engineering and a Ph.D. in Law.

In the area of professional training, 53 Medical Laboratory Science students were inducted on September 7 after recording a 100 per cent pass rate, including 13 distinctions, while 121 Nursing students and 96 Engineering students are also scheduled for professional inductions.

Professor Okhuoya said the university’s growth has also been strengthened by support from stakeholders, announcing plans by Chief Elvis Okonji to donate a world-class ICT building to the institution.

He appealed to other stakeholders to support the university’s development efforts, saying such partnerships would further enhance the institution’s capacity to provide quality education and contribute to national development.

The 22nd Convocation Ceremony is expected to formally mark the graduation of the students and celebrate the university’s academic and institutional achievements over the period.
