Standing beside ongoing drainage works, Site Engineer, Solomon Amusu-Ata, said the project has reached about 30 per cent completion, with more than 3.5 kilometres of drainage already completed alongside significant earthworks and stone base construction.

“We have covered over 3.5 kilometres of drainage, while construction is still ongoing,” Amusu-Ata said.

At the Fenix Engineering Construction Limited project on the 7.67-kilometre Ikabigbo-Ekperi Road linking Etsako West and Etsako Central, Project Manager, Engineer John Louis, said site clearance had been completed along the entire alignment, about 70 per cent of drainage works executed and three of the eight culverts completed.

“Our target is that by the middle of August, we should have about 1.5 kilometres asphalted up to the wearing course, weather permitting,” Louis said.

The inspection team also visited the Afashio-Idatto-Ikabigbo-Ayogwiri Gully Reclamation and Channelisation Project being handled by Amirco Universal Concept Limited, where Site Engineer, Oshoname Friday, said preliminary site clearing and survey work had just commenced.

“We started on Saturday. We are still carrying out preliminary works while our surveyors mark out the alignment,” he explained.

Officials said the intervention became necessary after advancing erosion threatened to disconnect nearby communities.

Across Esan land, a similar engagement was followed. At several sites, contractors acknowledged that the rains had slowed asphalt operations but said work had shifted to drainage construction, culverts, laterite filling and earthworks to ensure construction continued without shutting down access for residents.

On the nearly 22-kilometre Ukhun-Idoa-Ewu Road with nine spurs being executed by Nibraco Agencies Limited, Engineer Henry Ogbeide said about 700 metres had already been asphalted before the rains intensified.

“Rather than continue with earthworks that could make the road inaccessible, we switched to extending drainage. Our target is to push the drains to about five kilometres before returning to earthworks,” Ogbeide said.

Residents said the impact of the project is already being felt even before completion.

Retired teacher Mrs. Theresa Uduebor recalled that commercial motorcycle riders once refused to ply the road because of its poor condition.

“If you told a bike rider you were going to Ukhun Road, the person would simply drive away because it was a no-go area. Now we can see the difference. This place is becoming a little heaven on earth,” she said.

Another resident, Newton Ojemeke, said the transformation was already evident.

“Before this intervention, you could hardly cross this road after the rains. Today you can conveniently walk through without stress. The work he is doing will speak for him,” he said.

At the Ukpoke-Uhiele Road project being handled by Roadwell Contracting Limited, Engineer Zino Jonathan said drainage construction was about 95 per cent complete, while erosion control and laterite filling were progressing ahead of stone base works.

The team also visited the Akho-Agua-Ehanlen-Ewu Road also being executed by Roadwell Contracting Limited, where Site Coordinator, Agbonze Oze, said more than three kilometres had been asphalted, over four kilometres of drainage completed, while additional sections had already received stone base ahead of the dry season.

“We are on course. Earthworks, drainage and culvert construction are progressing simultaneously, while street lights will cover the entire stretch of the road,” Oze said.

Completed roads also formed part of the assessment. At Prince Jimoh Momodu Road and Iyoha Street in Irrua, residents said the completed roads have significantly improved movement within the communities.

Joseph Uke, a resident of Prince Jimoh Momodu Street, said he now prefers walking because of the improved condition of the road.

“I have lost like three kilograms because I now walk through this road every day. Before now, we had to jump over bad portions just to pass,” he said.

The tour ended with inspections of major Setraco Nigeria Limited projects, including the Ekpoma-Uromi-Ubiaja Road and the Ewu-Uromi-Ekpon Road. Speaking on behalf of the company, Area Manager, Michelle, said about seven kilometres of asphalt had already been completed on the Ewu-Uromi-Ekpon Road using specifications designed to withstand heavy-duty traffic.

“Unfortunately, this is the rainy season, which is not ideal for asphalt work. For now, we are concentrating on drainage, concrete works and laterite so that we are ready once the weather improves,” Michelle said.

Speaking at the end of the inspection, Engineer Obanor commended contractors for the progress recorded so far but said government would continue to monitor projects closely to ensure quality is not sacrificed for speed.

He disclosed that four road projects awarded under the current phase, including Prince Jimoh Momodu Road and Iyoha Street and University Road have already been completed, while several others are at different stages of execution.

The Permanent Secretary expressed optimism that with more favourable weather in the coming months, contractors would accelerate work and deliver more completed roads across the state.

By Chinedu Ekeja The Edo State
