The National Pension Commission (PenCom) has ruled out the need for the Nigeria Police Force to withdraw from the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), saying it is instead working with relevant authorities to improve the retirement benefits of police personnel.

Director-General of PenCom, Omolola Oloworaran, said on Tuesday that contrary to widespread public perception, the police had not exited the scheme, explaining that the agitation within the Force was driven by demands for enhanced retirement benefits comparable to those enjoyed by members of the Armed Forces.

Speaking during the Meet the Press briefing organized by the Presidential Communications Team at the State House, Abuja, Oloworaran said the commission had already begun engagements with the appropriate authorities to address the concerns.

She noted that PenCom shared the concerns of police personnel and was committed to ensuring retirees receive improved welfare, whether through reforms within the existing pension framework or any other arrangement approved by the government.

Oloworaran acknowledged differing opinions within the Force over the proposed withdrawal from the CPS, saying that while some groups continued to campaign for an exit, many officers were primarily interested in securing better retirement packages.
