The Black Queens of Ghana began their campaign at the Morocco 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, WAFCON with a 2-0 win over debutants, Cape Verde in Group D on Wednesday.
The Black Queens opened scoring in the sixth minute through Doris Boaduwaa who was assisted by Portia Boakye.
They doubled their lead in the 54th minute when Cape Verde defender Eleia Vieira turned the ball into her own net.
Cape Verde, playing their first ever match at the continental finals, ended the contest with 10 women after Klaydiana Borges was sent off in stoppage time.
In the other Group D encounter, the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon beat Mali 2-1.
Ngah Manga scored both goals for Cameroon as they extended their dominance over Mali to four wins and a draw.
The Indomitable Lionesses opened scoring in the 14th minute when Galatasary star Manga, showed excellent composure to bring down a lofted pass into space with her chest before calmly finishing at the near post.
Mali equalised in the 30th minute after Cameroon goalkeeper Michaely Bihina brought down Aïssata Traoré while attempting to gather a through ball inside the area.
A penalty kick was awarded after a lengthy VAR review and Traoré stepped up confidently to convert it.
Cameroon got their second goal in the 72nd minute after a VAR review resulted in another penalty which Manga scored to complete her brace.
Action continues at the 2026 WAFCON today with the second round of matches in Group A.
Senegal who lost their first game 2-0 to Algeria will take on Kenya who were thrashed 4-0 by hosts Morocco.
In the other group game, the Atlas Lionesses of Morocco will battle North African rivals Algeria with both sides hoping to consolidate top spot
