President Bola Tinubu is expected to receive the draft national policing bill for approval on September 3rd, 2026.
This is according to Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila.
Gbajabiamila said a national consultation on the completed draft will be held before the President’s final approval, after which the text will be revised for transmission to the National Assembly.
He said the seven-week work programme, running from July 27 to September 14, involves legal drafting, policy research, data analysis and implementation modelling.
Gbajabiamila noted that while the Senate approved the State Police Constitutional Proposal in June and the House passed the Executive State Police Bill in July, the amendment has not taken effect pending approval from state Houses of Assembly.
He stressed that state police “cannot mean 36 state militias,” saying strong national safeguards will guard against political abuse.
