The Three Lions looked on course to reach their first World Cup final since 1966 when Anthony Gordon gave them the lead in the 55th minute in a feisty encounter.
The Albeceleste however turned the contest around when Enzo Fernandez struck a magnificent equaliser in the 85th minute from an assist by Lionel Messi.
Substitute Lautaro Martinez completed the comeback when he headed in a stoppage-time winner from another Messi cross.
England’s wait for success goes on as they now face France in the third-place play-off on Saturday while Argentina will attempt to retain their crown in the final against European champions Spain on Sunday.
